Why do a Diploma in financial management?
The Diploma in Financial Management (DIFM) programme provides an overview of the necessary skills, knowledge and techniques to manage finances in the public or business sector context. The programme explores the complex challenges of financial management decision-making processes and deals with issues such as: budgeting; cash flow projections, cost benefit analysis, financial statements with respect to balance sheets, income and expenditure statements, assets register, ratio analysis, business investment, financing decisions, current asset management, and dividend and dividend policy. The areas of mergers and acquisitions are also explored.
What will I gain from this programme?
Upon completing this course, the participants attaining this qualification will be able to:
- Describe financial management terminology, concepts and principles.
- Apply various financial planning techniques such as budgeting, cash flow projections, cost benefit analysis, variance analysis and management.
- Analyse and interpret financial management statements and reports such as balance sheets, income and expenditure statements, budget, cash flow projections, variance analysis and asset registers.
- Describe valuations and credit management principles and processes.
- Explain how financial decisions are arrived at.
- Give the basic principles of sound business investment decisions.
- Appreciate financial principles of accountability, cost-effectiveness, cost-efficiency and value for money.
- Apply ratio analysis of financial statements and appreciate advantages and limitations of ratio analysis.
- Describe financial management success and failure factors.
What are my career prospects?
On completion of the Diploma in Financial Management candidates will be equipped to provide support in any financial environment. Employment could be obtained in accounting firms, or in finance departments in the public or private sector. Career advancement opportunities also exist in a wide variety of specialised areas within the accounting environment such as budget manager, financial planner, investment advisor, etc.
What is the duration of the programme, how is it structured?
The minimum duration of this programme is two years.
- 12 modules per year, 6 per semester for the first year.
- 8 modules per year, 4 per semester for year two.

What are the admission requirements?
- A senior certificate or equivalent entrance qualification.
- A or O level certificate.
- Other qualifications will be considered in special circumstances.
- Candidates who do not possess the necessary formal qualifications for admission may be considered for admission through a process which recognises prior learning. Such candidates will be considered on the basis of age and experience and will have to submit a motivation indicating why they should be included in the programme. This motivation will be carefully considered by the Programme Selection Committee to assess whether the applicant qualifies for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
All admissions to the DIFM programme are subject to the approval of the Regent Business School Selection Committee.
